“What goes around, comes around.” This fundamental rule of life often instills a sense of accountability in people, urging them to do the right thing. The age-old adage, “As you sow, so shall you reap,” encapsulates the concept of karma, guiding us through various life challenges. Writer-director Soham P. Shah crafts a realistic narrative based on this simple yet profound principle in his story of a man whose life takes a dramatic turn after meeting Anna (Vijay Raaz), a renowned astrologer with eerily accurate predictions.
Anna, seated cross-legged in a grand, dimly lit room filled with Vedic chants, delivers unfiltered forecasts to distressed individuals seeking guidance. He tells them precisely what the future holds and offers straightforward solutions to avert impending crises. Dev, the protagonist, initially dismisses Anna’s warnings about his difficulties leaving India. Focused solely on selling his ancestral assets to return to New Zealand and restart his post-COVID life, Dev aims to fulfill his father’s dream by starting his own venture. However, destiny has other plans, and Anna’s predictions come true as Dev encounters obstacle after obstacle.
Executed with a tight screenplay, this psychological thriller captivates the audience with a steady stream of unexpected twists in Dev’s journey. The events are relatable, reflecting common issues faced in dealings with banks, lenders, civic authorities, and property matters. Set in a small Indian town, Shah captures the essence of its slow-paced life and practical problems. The narrative’s strength lies in the compelling performances of Shreyas Talpade and Vijay Raaz. Madhoo portrays Anna’s devout South Indian wife convincingly, although her character could have been more impactful with deeper writing. Aksha Pardasany provides solid support as Dev’s girlfriend, Jiya.
‘Kartam Bhugram’ maintains a consistent pace without unnecessary songs or embellishments. While the loud background score could have been toned down, the film thankfully avoids jarring theatrics or excessive drama. It effectively conveys its message in a straightforward manner, albeit sometimes too simplistically. Yet, this simplicity is also its strength, as the story stays focused on demonstrating how karma eventually catches up with everyone.
Overall, ‘Kartam Bhugram’ is an engaging slice-of-life thriller that delivers a powerful message without straying from its core theme.
