Production:
Director George Miller and co-writer Nick Lathouris spent over 15 years developing the script for Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), creating detailed backstories for every character, especially the protagonist Imperator Furiosa. This extensive work eventually led to a screenplay centered around Furiosa, which Charlize Theron used as a reference for her portrayal in Fury Road. In July 2010, Miller announced plans to shoot Fury Road back-to-back with a prequel titled Mad Max: Furiosa, but only Fury Road was filmed during pre-production.
In November 2017, Miller’s production company filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. over unpaid earnings, delaying further franchise entries. By July 2019, Miller confirmed that a Furiosa film was still in the works, along with two more Mad Max sequels.
By May 2020, Miller planned to develop a Furiosa prequel after finishing his other film, Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022). During this time, he began casting for Furiosa, opting for a younger actress instead of de-aging Charlize Theron. The film spans 15 years, detailing Furiosa’s backstory and her journey to return home.
Amid the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, Miller used Skype to audition actresses for Furiosa. He selected Anya Taylor-Joy after seeing her in an early cut of Last Night in Soho and auditioning her with the “Mad as Hell” monologue from Sidney Lumet’s Network. Taylor-Joy also received advice from Nicholas Hoult, who played Nux in Fury Road. Tom Burke joined the cast in autumn 2021, replacing Yahya Abdul-Mateen II due to scheduling conflicts. Several Fury Road crew members returned for Furiosa, including editor Margaret Sixel, production designer Colin Gibson, composer Junkie XL, sound mixer Ben Osmo, costume designer Jenny Beavan, and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt.
In January 2022, Simon Duggan was confirmed as the cinematographer. By June 2022, Nathan Jones and Angus Sampson were set to reprise their roles from Fury Road. In August, Quaden Bayles, who appeared in Three Thousand Years of Longing after a viral video about his mistreatment at school, was announced to have a small role in Furiosa.
