The upcoming American superhero film commonly referred to as Deadpool 3, based on the Marvel Comics character Deadpool, is currently in development. Produced by Marvel Studios, Maximum Effort, and 21 Laps Entertainment, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it marks the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and serves as a sequel to Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018). Shawn Levy directs the film, with a script penned by the writing team of Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, Ryan Reynolds, and Levy. The cast includes Reynolds reprising his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, alongside Hugh Jackman, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jennifer Garner.
Development for the third Deadpool installment commenced at 20th Century Fox in November 2016 but was halted following Disney’s acquisition of the studio in March 2019. Subsequently, Marvel Studios took over the project, aiming to integrate Deadpool into the MCU while preserving the R-rating characteristic of the previous films, making it the first MCU entry with such a rating. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin joined as writers in November 2020, with Reese and Wernick returning for rewrites by March 2022. Levy was brought on board as director and producer alongside Reynolds at this time. Jackman confirmed his return as Wolverine from the X-Men films in August 2022, followed by additional casting in early 2023, coinciding with the announcement of Wells, Reynolds, and Levy as additional writers.
Principal photography commenced in May but was interrupted in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Production resumed in late November following the strike’s resolution, concluding in late January 2024. Filming took place primarily at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England, with additional scenes shot in Norfolk and at Bovingdon Film Studios.
Deadpool 3 is set to hit theaters in the United Kingdom on July 25, 2024, and in the United States on July 26, 2024, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.

Cast:
Here’s a rephrased version:
Ryan Reynolds portrays Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool, a witty mercenary endowed with rapid healing abilities but marked by extensive scarring resulting from an experimental regenerative treatment for terminal cancer. Scriptwriter Rhett Reese characterizes the film as a tale of Deadpool navigating an unfamiliar world, juxtaposing his eccentricity against the more grounded backdrop of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Reynolds is set to embody a “samurai-inspired” iteration of the character.
Hugh Jackman takes on the role of James “Logan” Howlett, famously known as Wolverine, a mutant equipped with regenerative powers, retractable claws, and a skeleton laced with adamantium. Jackman portrays Logan as having a conflicting dynamic with Deadpool, their interactions marked by friction and tension. To prepare for the part, Jackman embarked on an intense training regimen, consuming up to 8,000 calories per day.
Morena Baccarin reprises her role as Vanessa, Wade Wilson’s fiancée. Baccarin anticipates further exploration of Vanessa’s dynamic with Wilson, emphasizing the enduring connection that binds them together.
Brianna Hildebrand portrays Negasonic Teenage Warhead, a young mutant affiliated with the X-Men possessing the ability to generate explosive bursts from her body.
Jennifer Garner returns as Elektra Natchios, a skilled assassin of Greek heritage proficient in wielding sai. Garner revisits her portrayal of Elektra from the films Daredevil (2003) and Elektra (2005).
Also returning from the previous Deadpool films are Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Wilson’s elderly, sightless roommate; Karan Soni as Dopinder, a taxi driver and Wilson’s admirer who doubles as his unofficial chauffeur; Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, a member of the X-Men capable of transforming his body into organic steel; Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s girlfriend and fellow X-Men member; and Rob Delaney as Peter, a member of Wilson’s “X-Force” squad. Additionally, Emma Corrin has been cast in a prominent villainous role, while Matthew Macfadyen’s role remains undisclosed. The character Dogpool will be portrayed by the canine actor Peggy, alongside appearances from the characters Sabretooth and Toad.

Background
Following the triumph of Deadpool (2016), 20th Century Fox embarked on crafting two sequels. Plans for the third installment included the introduction of the X-Force superhero team. However, director Tim Miller opted out of returning for the sequels due to creative discrepancies with lead actor Ryan Reynolds. Subsequently, David Leitch was enlisted to helm Deadpool 2 (2018) in November 2016, while Fox sought another filmmaker to spearhead the third film.
In March 2017, Rhett Reese, co-writer of Deadpool and Deadpool 2, revealed that X-Force would first appear in Deadpool 2 before branching out into a standalone spin-off, paving the way for a larger narrative trajectory distinct from the third Deadpool film, which would delve into more intimate territory.
In December 2017, upon the announcement of 21st Century Fox’s acquisition by Disney, CEO Bob Iger declared plans to integrate Deadpool into the PG-13 rated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Disney expressed openness to producing R-rated Deadpool features, provided transparency with audiences about the content. Iger suggested the possibility of establishing a “Marvel-R brand” for characters like Deadpool.
In May 2018, Reynolds hinted that a third Deadpool film might not materialize as the franchise shifted focus to X-Force. However, Reese and his writing partner Paul Wernick remained confident that a third installment would eventually come to fruition, particularly after Reynolds took a hiatus from the character and the X-Force film debuted. This strategy was likened to the release of The Avengers (2012) bridging the gap between Iron Man 2 (2010) and Iron Man 3 (2013).
Leitch expressed interest in returning for another Deadpool project contingent on timing and circumstances. By August 2018, active development on a third Deadpool film was underway, with plans for production in Atlanta, Georgia, diverging from the previous films shot in Vancouver.
At the end of the year, Once Upon a Deadpool, a PG-13 rendition of Deadpool 2, was released. Its reception was closely monitored by Disney and Marvel Studios to gauge its implications for the character’s integration into the PG-13 MCU. Reynolds affirmed during promotional activities for Once Upon a Deadpool that a third film was in the works, promising a departure from the established formula.
Reynolds later disclosed that the envisioned third Deadpool installment was intended as a road trip narrative inspired by Rashomon (1950), featuring a collaboration with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine character, despite Jackman having retired from the role formally. Jackman had previously entertained the idea of teaming up with Reynolds after attending a Deadpool screening in 2016.
In March 2019, Disney finalized its acquisition of Fox, securing the film rights to numerous Marvel Comics characters, including Deadpool and the X-Men. As a result, Marvel-based projects under Fox’s purview were put on hiatus.
